|Aloha kakou! (Aloha everyone!)
Welcome to White Cloud Nursery, owned and operated by Pete and Jane Adams in the Ka'ohe Homesteads near Pahoa Village in the Puna District on the Big Island of Hawai'i. We specialize in propagating, growing and displaying Vireya Rhododendrons, the subtropical varieties originating in the southeastern Pacific region. The range of Vireyas extends from Southeast Asia, to the Phillipines, Java, Borneo and New Guinea. Vireyas constitute about one third of the approximately 1000 species of the genus Rhododendron.
It is our goal to showcase the great diversity of Vireya Rhododendrons in our gardens in a milieu of ideal growing conditions and a challenging terrain. It is our intention to offer for display in our gardens all varieties, species and hybrids that we acquire. In support of this effort we propagate and sell selected varieties of Vireyas for both domestic and worldwide shipment.
We have a 3000 square feet (280 square meter) greenhouse and 600 sf (56 sm) outside shade area for propagation and growing out export-certified plants. We now have an additional 500 (46 sm) in outside shade area for larger plants (for local and interisland shipping). In addition, a significant portion of our five acre (two hectare) property is dedicated to stocking and displaying the over 800 plants comprising nearly 500 varieties of species and hybrid Vireya and Maddeni Rhododendrons. Also, Hawaiian native species and selected tropical and subtropical plants complement and enhance the Vireya beds. We continue to expand as we acquire and grow out new varieties.
We have been growing Rhododendrons for many years. While working at technical computer positions in the Pacific Northwest, near Portland, Oregon, we established a small commercial nursery for temperate Rhododendrons on our country property in Washington State. We gained skill in techniques of Rhododendron propagation in the years that we operated our nursery. With the pressure of a difficult economy in the early 1990's, the Adams Family migrated to California and found successful careers in computer programming and network management. In 2001, a rising real estate market and supportive employers provided the ability to finally establish White Cloud Nursery.
While the nursery is closed, we hope you enjoy these web pages of the vast variety of vireya rhododendrons.
